The Story of
John Bosco
John Bosco is the visionary behind Shalom Community, a place of refuge, dignity, and hope for people with learning disabilities. Shalom Community is not just a physical space but a voice for the voiceless, an advocate for those often overlooked by society. It stands as a testament to their worth, representing their needs and walking alongside them in a world that often fails to understand their plight.
The passion for helping people with learning disabilities began in 2002 when John embarked on his mission to uplift the lives of individuals with learning disabilities. His profound inspiration came from his time working at L’Arche, an international community dedicated to those with intellectual disabilities, located in Busega. It was there, surrounded by the beauty and challenge of serving these individuals, that his dream took root.
“I have always had a deep desire to reach out and support people with learning disabilities,” John reflects. “They have always stirred something deep within me, and I found myself constantly asking, ‘How can I help? How can I be there for them?’”
His heart broke at the way these individuals were often treated—stigmatized, labeled as “cursed” or outcasts, enduring cruel names and rejection from society. But John saw something different. To him, they were not only integral members of their families but also of the larger community, deserving of love, care, and respect. His desire to change this narrative grew even stronger during his time as a teacher for special needs children at Ambrosoli International School under the programs of L’Arche. There, he interacted closely with children with learning disabilities, each day further igniting his passion for the cause.
In 2012, driven by his unyielding vision, John, together with a group of friends who shared his commitment, founded Shalom Community. They navigated the complex process of registration, eventually securing the organization’s recognition as a Community-Based Organization (CBO). From that moment, the Shalom Community became a formal, tangible force for good.
Reflecting on his work, John feels a profound sense of fulfillment. “Working with people with learning disabilities has transformed my life in the most beautiful way. It has brought me joy and meaning, and sharing my life with them has given me a deeper sense of purpose.”
For John, these individuals are not burdens or problems to be solved. Rather, they are open, loving, and welcoming souls who have been misunderstood for too long. He believes that once people truly get to know them, they will see the incredible capacity for love, compassion, and joy that they possess.
Looking ahead, John’s dream is to see Shalom Community expand its reach across Uganda, providing care, support, and advocacy for people with learning disabilities in every corner of the country. He is committed to creating awareness, educating families, and reshaping societal perceptions, ensuring that every individual, no matter their abilities, can live with dignity, respect, and love.
Through his tireless work, John Bosco continues to be a beacon of hope for those who have been marginalized for too long, showing that true compassion and community can change lives.
