Back ground
Shalom community is an organisation which was started in response to the challenges faced by people with learning disabilities who seemed to have been neglected and rejected in society. It was started by former LARCHE assistants who strongly believed in the noble cause of reaching out to the minority and disadvantaged people of the society. Shalom community is seeking a grant to improve the child services for children with disability and their families in the community. The objective is to create a home providing a conducive place for children and youth with disabilities, to be heard, educated, supported and live a dignified life. Land was acquired and construction was started inclusive of an infirmary, furnishing with necessary furniture and fittings but funds are needed to be able to complete the building.
Shalom Community was established in February 2012 in Uganda, East Africa. We are a dedicated inter-religious community-based organization committed to supporting people with learning disabilities (PWDLs). Our mission is to address the challenges faced by these individuals, who are often neglected and marginalized in society.
Statement of Need
Shalom community is at the frontline to support children with disabilities. Most of the children and youth with disabilities in our community have no access to any kind of rehabilitation services. We observed that there is no close attention and supervision to their education and health needs. The children are regarded as a burden to their families and most times discriminated. Personal hygiene is often in pathetic conditions as little or no care is accorded to them.
Outreaches have been done by shalom community with in and in other communities to help cub the situation even though there is a lot still needed to be done. In view of this situation, shalom community proposed to create a home which is intended to offer life needs in view of children and youth disabilities.
